Despite being enjoyed by people around the world the avocado isn’t available locally in many regions. It has to be imported in many locations due to its growth limitations. Read on to learn where they grow and how to soften avocados.
The Avocado Tree
The avocado fruit is taken from the avocado tree, which requires a tropical climate to thrive due to a poor tolerance for cold weather. Mexico (which was thought to be the origin of the avocado) is the highest producer of the fruit globally.
How is the Avocado Tree Cultivated?
The avocado tree can be planted directly through burying of the seed into humid soil in the garden where the ambient temperature is within the range of 60-85F. The soil should be moist but not saturated with water – as saturated water will lead to the seed rotting.
After planting, the seed should sprout within 3 – 6 weeks. The seed should be planted where sunlight can easily reach it without obstruction. Furthermore, March through June is the ideal season for planting avocado seeds since the days are longer, providing more-than-adequate light to nurture growth.
Once the tree has established a firm stem and adequate roots for support, they can accommodate a cooler temperature but not a freezing one. The soil pH should be within the range of 5.5 to 7 for the best results.
If 6 weeks or more have passed without sprouting it could mean your avocado seed isn’t viable. You may need to plant another if there’s still time.
What is the Annual Yield of a Single Avocado Tree?
Because there are different varieties of the avocado tree the annual yield can vary. Virtually all varieties of the tree take approximately 5 years to reach the fruiting phase. Once a tree matures and begins producing it can yield anywhere from 120 to as many as 350 fruits annually (again depending on the variety of tree).
It’s worth noting avacodo seedlings purchased from a nursery may take longer to mature before producing fruit.
